Diamond polished concrete is the process of mechanically grinding, honing, and polishing an existing concrete slab using progressively finer diamond-impregnated abrasives. Unlike coatings that sit on top of the concrete, diamond polishing transforms the concrete itself — revealing the natural stone aggregate within and creating a smooth, reflective surface that's part of the slab.

The term "diamond" refers to the diamond grit embedded in the grinding tools. We start with coarse diamonds (typically 30–50 grit) to flatten the surface and remove any existing coatings or contaminants, then move through progressively finer grits (100, 200, 400, 800, 1500, and finally 3000 grit) to achieve the desired sheen level.

A chemical densifier is applied during the process, which penetrates deep into the concrete and creates a permanent chemical reaction that hardens the slab from within. This eliminates concrete dusting permanently and makes the surface significantly harder and more abrasion-resistant.

The Diamond Polishing Process: Grit by Grit

Phase 1 — Grinding (30–50 grit): Coarse diamonds flatten the slab, remove coatings, and expose the aggregate. This phase creates the most dust (captured by HEPA vacuums) and takes the most time.

Phase 2 — Honing (100–200 grit): Medium diamonds refine the surface, removing the scratches from the coarse grind and beginning to smooth the concrete.

Phase 3 — Honing (400–800 grit): Fine diamonds create a smooth, closed surface. The concrete begins to show reflectivity. Densifier is applied between grits.

Phase 4 — Polishing (1500 grit): Ultra-fine diamonds produce a satin-to-semi-gloss sheen. The natural aggregate becomes clearly visible.

Phase 5 — Burnishing (3000 grit): The finest diamonds create a high-gloss, mirror-like finish. For maximum clarity, a stain-guard protector is applied as the final step.

Note: We don't always go to 3000 grit. Your desired sheen level determines how far we go in the process. Many commercial spaces stop at 400–800 grit for a satin finish with maximum slip resistance.

Surface: Polished concrete is the concrete itself — no coating layer. Epoxy is a coating that sits on top of the concrete.

Lifespan: Polished concrete — 20+ years, as long as the building. Epoxy — 10–20 years, then needs stripping and reapplication.

Maintenance: Polished concrete — dust mop and occasional damp mop. Epoxy — similar, but scratches show more on dark coatings.

Slip Resistance: Polished concrete — adjustable by sheen level, matte is very slip-resistant. Epoxy — smooth finishes can be slippery when wet.

Chemical Resistance: Polished concrete — good with densifier and guard. Epoxy — excellent, resists most chemicals.
